Bacillusstrainswith99.7%16SrRNAgenesequencesimilaritywerecharacterizedwithDNA:DNAhybridization,cellularfatty acid(CFA)analysis,andtestingof100phenotypictraits.Whenpairedwiththemostcloselyrelatedtypestrain,percentDNA:DNA similarities(%S)forsixBacillusstrainswereallfarbelowtherecommended70%thresholdvalueforspeciescircumscription withBacillus nealsonii.AnapparentgenomicgroupoffourBacillus strainpairingswith94%–70%Swascontradictedbythe failureofthestrainstoclusterinCFA-andphenotype-baseddendrogramsaswellasbytheirdi?erentiationwith9–13species leveldiscriminatorssuchasnitratereduction,temperaturerange,andacidproductionfromcarbohydrates.ThenovelBacillus strains were monophyletic and very closely related based on 16S rRNA gene sequence.
