Acriticalneedexistsfornewimagingtoolstomoreaccuratelycharacterizebonequalitybeyondtheconventionalmodalitiesof dualenergyX-rayabsorptiometry(DXA),ultrasoundspeedofsound,andbroadbandattenuationmeasurements.Inthispaper weinvestigatethemicrowavedielectricpropertiesofexvivotrabecularbonewithrespecttobulkdensitymeasures.Weexploit avariationinourtomographicimagingsysteminconjunctionwith anewsoftpriorregularizationschemethatallowsusto accuratelyrecoverthedielectricpropertiesofsmall,regularlyshapedandpreviouslyspatiallyde?nedvolumes.Westudiedsix excisedporcinebonesamplesfromwhichweextractedcylindricallyshapedtrabecularspecimensfromthefemoralheadsand carefullydemarrowedeachpreparation.Thesamplesweresubsequentlytreatedinanacidbathtoincrementallyremovevolumes ofhydroxyapatite,andwetestedthemwithboththemicrowavemeasurementsystemandamicro-CTscanner.Themeasurements wereperformedat?vedensitylevelsforeachsample.Theresultsshowastrongcorrelationbetweenboththepermittivityand conductivityandbonevolumefractionandsuggestthatmicrowaveimagingmaybeagoodcandidateforevaluatingoverallbone h
