Thispilotstudyprovidestheproofofprincipleforbiomedicalapplicationofnovelpolyelectrolytecomplexes(PECs)obtained via electrostatic interactions between dextran sulphate (DXS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)andatomicforcemicroscopy(AFM)showedthatDXS/PAHpolyelectrolytecomplexeswereMonodispersed withregularrounded-shapefeaturesandaveragediametersof250nmat2:1weightratiosofDXS/PAH.FluorescentlylabelledDXS and?uorescein-isothiocyanate-(FITC-)conjugateDXSwereusedtofollowcelluptakee?ciencyofPECsandbiodegradabilityof theirenzymaticallydegradableDXS-layersbyusingconfocallaserscanningmicroscopy(CLSM).Moreover,quantitativeMTTand TrypanBlueassayswereemployedtovalidatePECsasfeasibleandsafenanoscaledcarriersatsingle-celllevelwithoutadverse e?ectsonmetabolismandviability. 1.I
