Methods:Twelvepatientsunderwentautogenousbonecollectionusingabonechisel,bonescraper,trephinedrill, andbonefilterduringboneaugmentationsurgeryasapartofimplanttherapy,andthetotalbacterialcountin bonedebriscollectedbyeachwasdetermined. Results:Followinganaerobicincubation,bacterialcolonyformationwasfoundinallofthesamples.Themean colonyformingunits(CFU)/ginsamplescollectedbythetrephinedrillwasfoundtobesignificantlylowerthan thatofsamplesobtainedwiththeotherdevices,whilethosevaluesforsamplescollectedbythebonescraperand bonefilterwassignificantlyhigherascomparedtothebonechiselandtrephinedrill. Conclusion:Thebacteriallevelsmaystillcarrytheinfectionrisk.Thusprophylacticantibiotictherapymaybe indicatedwhenusingboneparticlesforintraoralaugmentationprocedures.
