AbstractRobert Frost (1874-1963), widely read and constantly anthologized, is one ofthe most famous American poets in the 20th century. In his as long as ninety-year lifejourney, all kinds of glories came to him. He won the Pulitzer Prize four times andwas the only poet in American literary history that was invited by the President toread his poem at the inauguration. Moral meaning of Frost’s poems has been aprofound impact on both philosophy and literature.Most of his poetry is about the New England life, and nature provides him withnew ideas and inspiratious. And the tree is on example. The “tree” image is hisfavorable subjuect, which appeares in many of his poems frequently. Therefore, somecritics and scholars consider Frost as a pastoral poet with a tree complex. However,Frost, as a poet, who believes that “A poem begins in delight and ends in wisdom”,endows the significance of poetry far more than what it seems. So in order tounderstatnd him and his poems better the archetypal criticism should be employed asinterprets a text by focusing on recurring symbols, images, and character types andspecial events in a literary work. As a form of literary criticism, it aims to find thebasic essence behind the visual form.This thesis aims on explore the tree images in Robert Frost’s poems from anarchetypal persprctive in order to find out the inner relationship between trees andRobert Frost.This thesis consists of three parts: the first is a general introduction to RobertFrost and his poems, and also the concept of the Archetype Criticism; the second isithe tree archetype in the collective unconsciousness from the ancient worship of treetotems, rituals to trees recurring in Mythology and Religion. All those indicate that thetree archetype lays an indelible mark in the human collective unconscious.
