Conventional cutting needles have the third cutting edge on the inside curvature of the needle. They are efficient cutting needles but some have expressed concern that the needle creates a hole in which the suture lies at the apex, there is a theoretical risk that the suture may be more liable to pull out through tissue. Reverse Cutting needles have a cutting edge on the outer convex curvature of the needle. This cutting edge extends from the point for around 10% of the length of the needle, however this may be longer in some cases for specific applications.. Common applications for these needles are : Closure of skin and various plastic surgery applications and for orthopaedic procedures. In contrast to conventional cutting needles, the suture restes against a broad flat tissue surface, reducing the risk of suture pull out. reverse cutting needles are stronger than conventional cutting needles because of their different triangular shape. Like P needles, PRIME needles are specialised skin needles which utilise a slimmer wire for use in finer applications. The lower S.E.M. illustration shows the finer PRIME needle compared to a P needle on the right. The unique hollow form point design improves penetration over previous needles of this type which were supplied for Plastic and cosmetic surgery.
