She pointed out emphatically economic consideration is the bondsof wedlock and love. She said the marriage settled by love is happy and ideal. Analyze on the two marriage types in Pride and Prejudice, thethesis explicated that Austenrsquo;s view of marriage was progressive, advocated by her focus on the equality between men and women. Sheemphasized marriage should be of equal importance both by love and by economic consideration but love plays the guiding role. 【Key words】Pride and Prejudice Views of marriage Economic consideration 1．Chapter One: an Analysis of Pride and Prejudice The Social Background of the Novel： Pride and Prejudice, a gentle but witty satire of courtship andmarriage, is certainly Jane Austenrsquo;s most popular novel, and hasalways been a favorite works to readers, just as it was a favorite ofJane Austen herself. The background of Pride and Prejudice is thetime of the Regency in Britain. At the end of the 18th century and thebeginning of the 19th century, Britain was at the period of transitionfrom the earlier stage of Capitalism to Capitalist Industrialization.The society was developing rather slowly not only in politics but alsoin economy compared with the developed capitalistic society of themiddle 19th century. At that time womenrsquo;s education and employmentwere impossible. Womenrsquo;s position was determined by the socialeconomic development at that time. Therefore, women of the “genteel”class in Austenrsquo;s novels were characterized by the features of that erawhen they were handling their love affairs or marital problems.
