Analysis of Hemingway’s View on War in A Farewell to Arms By Zhangwen Registered?No.?201113140825 School?of?Foreing?Studies Huanggang?Norml?University December,?2011 Abstract A?Farewell?to?Arms is often regarded as one of the most best artistic achievement of Hemingway.?In 2001, The Sun?Also?Rises and A?Farewell?to?Arms were?listed in the “The 100 Best English-Language Novels of the 20th Century around the world”; this shows how great this book is and how great the author is. In the novel?〝A Farewell to Arms,?Hemingway?expressed the anti-war theme?and the hope of peace making the novel one of his representative works. The author put his own experience of war to the man whose name is Henry, Hemingway reflected the true?source of? miser and misfortune of the soldiers?and the people in the war through putting his?true feelings?into?words, hoping so as to?awaken? people’s awareness to oppose the war. The?heroines love tragedy further emphasized cruel and hash of the war. In the?process of reading?and?studying to this thesis,?the author found out that?although many?scholars have done research on A?Farewell?to?Arms?from different triangles, but the research on this novel is rare from the aspects mentioned below: the anti-war view of Hemingway, the call of the peace by Hemingway, and the impacts of Hemingway’s anti-war view. The?author paid attention to the?Hemingway’s?anti-war view?separately from these three aspects?and intended to make a contribution for the further study?on this subject in the future.?
