英语阅读技巧与实践 English Reading Skills and Practice 英语阅读学习交流课 A Communicative Class for English Reading Outline Word Study Sentence Reading Paragraph Reading Text Reading Critical Reading and Appreciating Reading Part One Word Study Context Clues Context clues refer to the sentence and the paragraph in which a word occurs. In using the context to decide the meaning of a word, you should keep the following points in mind. ⑴ Use the meanings of other words in the sentence of paragraph and the meaning of the sentence as a whole to reduce the number of possible meanings. ⑵ Use grammar and punctuation(标点符号) clues which point to the relationships among various parts of the sentence. ⑶ Know a general meaning about the unfamiliar word with the help of your general or common knowledge of the world by recognizing situations in which a new word accurs. ⑷Use the strategies of synonym or antonym if possible. Examples: ▲ The wind made the kite soar high above the trees in the park.(strategy 1) ◆The land is fertile; the farmers can grow many kinds of crops there.(strategy 2) ● The man behaved furtively and the policeman thought he might be the thief who stole the money.(strategy 3) ■ John does not like swimming; therefore he does not take part in aquatic sports.(strategy I and 3) ▼In the past, the world seemed to run in an orderly way. Now, however, everything seems to be in a state of turmoil.(strategy 4 and 2) ▼Our uncle was a roamer, an incurable wander who never could stay in one place.(strategy 4 and 2) Stems and Affixes(Word Analysis) Another way of meaning-guessing is turning to the stems and affixes(including prefixes and suffixes), that is, is analyzing the meanings of parts of words. Generally speaking, prefixes change the meaning of a word and suffixes change its part of speech. Here are some examples: compress, depress, repress, suppress, express, oppress, impress. Examples: (1)The film compresses a few years into half an hour. (2)Depress this but
