IAcknowledgmentsIwouldliketotakethisopportunitytoexpressmysinceregratitudetomysupervisor,ProfessorZhaoYong,withoutwhomthisthesiswouldnotbecompletedsosmoothly.Hehasgivenmevaluableinstructionsandsuggestionsduringthewholeprocessoftopicselection,datacollection,thesisorganizationandrevision.Itishisgenerositythathehastakentimeofffromhisbusyscheduletoguidemepatientlyineveryprocedure.MyheartfeltthanksarealsoextendedtoProfessorHuKaibaoandZhuZhengcai.Prof.Huhashelpedmetobeequippedwithindispensableknowledgeandskillsincorpuslinguistics,whileProf.Zhuhastaughtmeacomprehensiveknowledgeofstatistics.Theknowledgeturnsouttobeveryusefulintheprocessofconductingthequantitativestudyinthisthesis.IamalsoverygratefultoalltheteacherswhogavemeinspiringinstructionsintheMAProgram,towhomIowemuchofmyknowledgeinwriting,translation,andlinguistics.IIAbstractThisthesisisacorpus-basedcomparativestudyofthedegreeofsyntacticEuropeanizationinthemedialanguagefromChineseMainlandandHongKong.TheobjectiveofthepresentstudyistofindoutthemedialanguageofwhichregionenjoyshigherdegreeofsyntacticEuropeanizationandtoexplorethepossiblecausestointerpretthedifferentdegreesofEuropeanizationfoundinthisstudy.Inthisway,thisresearchisexpectedtoprovidereferentialmaterialsforthecomparativestudyofChinesevarietiesinMainlandandHongKongwithaviewtopromotingthemutualunderstandingandexchangesbetweenthetworegions.Inthisresearch,thetwoself-constructedcorporaofmedialanguagearecomparableinnature.Thetextsourcesarefromelectronicversionsofauthoritativenewspaper.Bothcorporahavethesizeofaround200,000Chinesecharactersrespectively,andeachsampleinthecorporarangesfrom200to1000characters.ThepublicationdatesofallthesenewspapersarefromJanuarytoMarchin2013.Moreover,thetextsinthecorporaarebalancedintopic,coveringthefieldsofart,industry,commerce,politics,etc.Aftertextcleaningandpart-of-speechtagging,textsaretobesearchedtocomparethedegreesofsyntacticEuropeanizationineachstructure.AlthoughthefrequencyofeachEuropeanizedstructurecanbecountedwiththehelpofthea
