PAGE PAGE 5 Abstract: Confucius (551 – 479BC),named Qiu,,also known as Zhongni, was a great philosopher, politician, educator, the founder and the spirit idol of Confucianism of the Spring and Autumn Period of Chinese History. This article is to study the Sage’s Traces Pictures of Confucius, which are the carrier of the inheritance and development of spirit of Confucianism. By reviewing the pictures and records handed down to us, in the aspect of history and art, this article presents a comprehensive overview of the development of the Sage’s Trances Pictures of Confucius throughout every Chinese dynasty. Although there are only a few of real image and texts of Sages Traces Pictures of Confucius still existed today, and the earliest version we could trace is from Ming Dynasty, this article aims to re-present the beginning and subsequent development of Sages Traces Pictures of Confucius, by tracing and interpreting those ancient pictures and records. In the process of the heritage and development of Confucianism in china, the idea and spirit represented by Confucius, has integrated with the carrier of Confucian ideas. For the majority of the general population, the carrier of ideas is more visible and acceptable for them to learn and adopt. It happens that the most ancient Confucians have utilized pictures and texts, which were one of the most intuitively acceptable carriers in developing and passing down the concepts of Confucianism. And the Sage’s Traces Pictures of Confucius is an example of imagery carrier. This article will discuss from the following aspects: The first part will focus on the formation of the Sage’s Traces Pictures of Confucius. Starting from the beginning of modeling the image of Confucius by Confucian, the article reviews the different forms and methods used by the ancient Confucian in praise and publicity of Confucianism. Furthermore, this article studies in depth on the initiatives to used images as a new carrier in developing Confucianism.
