iii iii The result, to a certain extent, also demonstrated the limitations of Kaplan’s contrastive rhetorical theory. Rhetorical patterns adopted differ from individual to individual and from different English proficiency; the students at the same grade level may choose different rhetorical patterns; even the freshmen may adopt proper rhetorical patterns in their writing. However, the fact is that the higher the students’ English proficiency is, the much oftener they will adopt proper rhetorical patterns in their writing. If the teachers can consciously teach the students the proper English rhetorical patterns at the earlier level, the students may grasp the idiomatic rhetorical patterns earlier. The study on the rhetorical features of argumentative essays by Chinese English majors may possibly reflect the present situation of Chinese English majors’ argumentative writing. This not only helps the teachers to implement with target English writing teaching but also helps English learners to master proper rhetorical patterns in accordance with English writing conventions to effectively improve the teaching and practice of English argumentative writing.
