However, some English translatums of Chinese university mottos are so awkward or even unintelligible that they prevent their functions from fulfilling. This thesis probes into the application of Skopos Theory to the translation of the university motto with special reference to fidelity rule, skopos rule and coherence rule in order to work out the feasible translation procedures. Translating Chinese university mottos into English primarily aims at publicizing the information about the education aim and spirit of a university, ensuring the target readers’ full understanding of the sense of the source motto and its beauty in form. To achieve this purpose, the translator should try his best to overcome the differences in style, logic, and culture between Chinese and English, and adopts a target-language-oriented translation method, which involves the translation procedures such as adaptation, omission, addition, transposition, literal translation and free tra
