Figurative Expressionism in China’s culture Abstract The art of Figurative Expressionism is the art that uses figure as the main body, that handles works with the exaggeration and the distortion of Abstract Expressionism，that is utilized to express the artists’ inner feelings for the outer world. Originated from the West and based with phenomenology, Figurative Expressionism is influenced by orient philosophy and coordinates the outside and the inside of the painting in order to seek the essence. The majority of Chinese artists are attracted by the Western art of Figurative Expressionism, which is developing with unprecedented speed in China. What results in this phenomenon? The dissertation manages to find out the answers by analyzing the oil paintings of Figurative Expressionism that spreads comprehensively in the South of China and takes on Chinese newly literati’s feature. The main research results of this dissertation are as follows: Discussed the causes of Figurative Expressionism’s appearance and the characteristic. Moreover, proved the resemblance between the phenomenology and ancient philosophy in China. Explored the possibility of the spread and the development of Figurative Expressionism in China. Explained the coincidence between the art of Figurative Expressionism and the art of Chinese traditional painting and pointed out that Figurative Expressionism is anything but a fresh thing because of its existence in Chinese traditional painting for a long time. Illuminated the current position and expectation of Figurative Expressionism ‘s development in China. Indicated the practical meaning of the development of Figurative Expressionism in China by analyzing disadvantage of the Post-modern art and the loss of the current art’s public spirit.
