Metaphor translation is regarded as difficult and challenging for translators because they have to solve a host of problems engendered by linguistic and extra-linguistic differences. To find a satisfactory solution, translators should consider various contextual correlates and structural objects involved in the process of metaphor translation. Verschueren understands and elucidates pragmatics from a totally new viewpoint. In his masterpiece Understanding Pragmatics, he specifies pragmatics as an approach to language which takes into account the full complexity of its cognitive, social and cultural functioning and advances a new pragmatic theory—Adaptation Theory. This thesis attempts to explore the translation of metaphors from Fortress Besieged by means of Adaptation Theory, and the research is conducted on the basis of the following considerations.
