山东科技大学硕士学位论文 Abstract ABSTRACT In this thesis, the author attempts to discuss factors and strategies that affect English translation of Chinese Literary Classics (CLC for short) from the perspective of Polysystem Theory. Translating CLC into English dates back to the middle and late of the 18th century. However, most versions had been done by foreign scholars. Until the late 20th century, when more and more CLC were translated by Chinese scholars, the studies in this field were launched rapidly. At present, there are three aspects that attract scholars both at home and abroad. 1. Why should we translate them? 2. Who will be qualified for the job? and 3. How to translate them? The questions mentioned above involve linguistic, literary and cultural problems. After the 1970s, translation shift of culture study and culture shift of translation study in international academe give us a new view to study English translation of CLC. In the context of globalization, the study of English translation of CLC from the view of culture is of more epochal significance. The main body of the thesis contains four chapters: In Chapter One, the author defines the term Chinese classics, discusses the history and study of English translation of CLC at home and abroad, and presents different arguments and views about this issue. Meanwhile, the author introduces Polysystem Theory and points out that Polysystem Theory develops a wide dimension to study English translation of CLC. In Chapter Two, the author introduces Polysystem Theory, the theoretical source, and its contributions to translation study and its development, and also summarizes the domestic study on the theory. In Chapter Three, the author discusses main factors affecting English translation of CLC and points out that the factors are the position in the cultural system of the versions in/out of one’s mother tongue, norms, ideology and patrons.
