The current material for the diesel-engine cylinder head is mostly cast iron and replacing it with aluminum alloys would result in very effective weight reduction. In order to adapt to the increase of the engine power, the research attempts to improve the microstructure of aluminum alloys, which is used in diesel-engine cylinder head, and to enhance its properties by adding trace element. In this paper, the effect of Sr, RE and Mg on the microstructure and properties of ZL114A alloys were systematically investigated, by analyzing microstructure and mechanical properties testing of the alloys. On the basis, the better process scheme is proposed through the optimization of process parameters. The influence of Sr modification on the microstructure and properties of the ZL114A alloys were systematically investigated. The results show that the addition of Sr content can reduce the size of eutectic Si particles and improve the mechanical properties of ZL114A alloys. The alloys can be fully modified by 0.03wt% Sr addition and obtain the excellent properties after T6 heat treatment whose tensile strength, yield strength and elongation reach 316.5MPa, 259.3MPa and 4.7% respectively and can meet the material requirements of diesel engine cylinder head. Much more addition of Sr content causes the coarser of eutectic Si particle, the defections of shrinkage porosity and cavity etc, which weaken the tensile properties of the alloys. After the Sr addition and T6 heat treatment, a lot of small and deep dimples are observed from the fracture morphology, which enhances the ductility of alloys and makes its fracture mechanisms transform from brittle fracture
