Topic: Using Language-Listening, Speaking and Writing (Unit 5, NSEC M5)
I. My understanding of the teaching material:
The teaching contents on the textbook are listening, speaking and writing. The listening material here serves as the input while the speaking and writing task are the outputs. The ultimate task should be the writing part but it won’t be easy. Therefore I will spend more time help the students to fulfill this task according to scaffolding principle of task-based teaching approach.
The students are supposed to acquire the necessary knowledge and language through the listening text. But I know a mere input of he listening is not enough assurance so I make sure the students can get a review of the useful first- aid knowledge and language in the lead-in part, making it not only a stimulation or introduction. Also, the students will be reminded to use connecting words during the speaking task, which is a preparation for writing task.
The writing task is not for the students to write down the suggestions they heard exactly from the listening material, which would make this writing task more like a dictation. Its purpose is to make the students use the things they acquired in this unit and express in their own ways.
According to task-based teaching approach, a real task should be an authentic one, so I would tell the students before the class that this is part of a first aid pamphlet writing project, which is set to help as many people as possible to deal with emergent situations.
Teaching Aims:
Knowledge:To help the students use words and expressions related to first aid and make suggestions.
To impress the students with the new words and expressions that can be used to give first aid suggestions.
Ability: To enable the students to analyze emergent situations and write first aid suggestions.
Emotion: To develop the students’ teamwork spirit and confidence.
To encourage the students to help people in need of first aid.
