Abstract
In order to achieve the two conflicting goals, driving safety and mobility of the elderly, the present
paper aims to discuss the possibility that intelligent artefacts can play a role of reducing crash risk of
elderly drivers. Experiments using the driving simulator were carried out. 20 subj ects were classified
to the control or reference group. Subj ects in the groups were requested to drive in the same course
and their driving performance was measured as defined by the number of crashed experienced in the
course. Only subj ects in the control group were accompanied by a conversation robot which praises
the performance if crashes were successfully avoided and encourages drivers if crashes were not
avoided. Results of the experiments are presented, and it is discussed whether the conversation robot
has a protective effect on drivers, even if its talk includes only retrospective information on drivers
performance.
