PAGE PAGE 23 从功能目的论看合同法翻译 INTRODUCTION With China’s frequent communication with the rest of the world in the political, economic, cultural, trade and foreign exchange areas, increasing attention have been paid to the legal and law translation. Thus the community has begun to strengthen the emphasis on legal translation. In the last ten or twenty years, theoretical research and practice have been rapidly developed on legal translation, and we have achieved gratifying results. But at the same time many problems still exist in the translation of law. Lack of translation quality is one of the most serious and urgent problems. Because of its highly specialized nature, legal translation, especially Chinese to English, has always been difficulty for the translator to make every effort to translate successfully. The importance of legal translation Methodology This study is based on the Functional Equivalence theory proposed by Eugene Nida. This paper tries to introduce different features of legal documents both in Chinese and English from the perspective of lexis, syntax stylistics． Structure This thesis consists of six parts： The first part is the brief introduction．In this part, the writer gives the reason(s) why to choose this topic. Literature review gives a general overview on Functional Equivalence both at home and abroad. The next part is a brief introduction of Functional Equivalence. In the fourth part, by analyzing the English version of the Contract Law of People’s Republic of China, this paper tries to analyze differences between two languages from lexical, syntactic and stylistic perspective. In the fifth part, the paper attempts to provide some feasible suggestions and skills to improve legal translations for translators.
