PAGE PAGE 18 A Study on Verbal Taboo from Perspective of Cross-Cultural Communication 跨文化交际视角下禁忌语探索 Abstract Taboo means avoid holy or evil things in Tongan language. Taboo is a common cultural phenomenon with social and religious feature in human society, and it’s also a social and psychological complex phenomenon. Taboo belongs to topic of cultural linguistics, stepping the multidisciplinary. Taboo custom and taboo language have infiltrated into every aspect of people’s lives, directly and indirectly restrained human’s behaviors. This paper explains the origin, development of taboo, and analyses differences of verbal taboos from different fields between Chinese and Western to explore the deep connotations and sources behind the verbal taboos. So as to further deepen peoples understanding of the verbal taboo under Chinese and Western culture under, master different taboos and evasive methods under cross-cultural environment to reduce faults, conflicts, and improve communication skills of Chinese people and westerners, which has a very important role in promoting cultural exchange between trans-regional, cross-language and cross-ethnic. Key words: verbal taboo; differences; cross-cultural communication; communication skills 摘要 Taboo 既禁忌的意思，汤加语的意思是对“神圣或邪恶事物的避忌”汉语译为塔布。它是人类普遍存在的带有一定社会性及宗教性的文化现象，同时它又是一种复杂的社会心理现象。禁忌语属于文化语言学的一个跨多学科领域的话题，禁忌习俗与禁忌语已渗透到人们生活的各个方面，直接或间接的制约着人们的行为。本文旨在通过阐述禁忌语的起源、发展，以及分析中西方在不同领域禁忌语的表现差异，探究其背后的文化渊源和文化内涵，从而进一步加深人们对中西方文化下禁忌语的了解，掌握跨文化环境下不同禁忌及其避忌方法，为人们减少失误、冲突，提高跨文化情境下中西方人民的交流技巧，对促进跨地区、跨语言、跨民族之间的文化交流具有十分重要的作用。 关键词：禁忌语；差异；跨文化交际；交流技巧 Contents I.?Introduction The term taboo comes from the Tongan tapu or Fijian tabu (prohibited, disallowed, forbidden), a vocabulary of Tongan language.?Its English use dates to 1777 when the British explorer James Cook visited Tonga.?Its original sense was scared, and inviolable. Language is a social phenomenon,?different languages represent different cultures. Language is rooted in the culture and reflects the culture. V
