1 Objective and Procedure of InvestigationDeep understanding of the geology at and below the surface is needed for the successful and economic design and construction of civil engineering, such as railway, expressway, etc. The objective of a geologic investigation involves three aspects, which are:detailed knowledge of the geologic condition related to the engineering including topographic features, stratum and lithology, geologic structure, hydrogeological characteristics, potential mass wasting, special soils, meteorological feature and earthquake background, materials can be used for engineering works; suitability evaluation of the site for the proposed engineering works;suggestion for dealing with the geologic condition based on the suitability evaluation.1.1 Objective of Geological Investigation
1.2 Procedure of Geological InvestigationThe typical investigation for an important civil engineering project, such as railway or highway, is commonly accomplished in three stages, namely an office reconnaissance, a field reconnaissance and a site exploration. In the office reconnaissance stage, available information about the engineering project and the geology of the location is collected and reviewed, based on which reasonable field reconnaissance plan and a preliminary plan of the site exploration are proposed. In the field reconnaissance stage, the items include but are not limited to topography and vegetation, surface soil and rock, natural slopes and gully, geologic structures, surface and subsurface water, based on the selection which final plan of site exploration is decided. In the site exploration phase, some information is checked and made sure by the use of drilling, sampling and geophysical tests.
