The Background of Hemingway’s Life On July 21,1899, there was a boy born at Oak Park, Illinois, who was considered as a 20th century’ s important and outstanding writer in the world afterwards. He is Hemingway, one of the most important influences on the development of the short story and novel in American fiction. Hemingway’s childhood was just the years when his family was in the situation of blossom and growth. In his family, his father was a doctor who had a good public praise because of his profession and conduct at Oak Park; his mother dreamt to be an opera actress and had a great pursuit and love to music, art and the civilization in the upper classes of society. His mother taught him how to appreciate the beautiful; his father taught him to hunt and fish. He was influenced by his parents a lot, loved nature and inherited his father’s expansive character. Extensive hobbies were around his lifetime. Fresh things were always his best love at that time, so taking adventures was always found in his daily life. Hemingway began his writing career for the Kansas City Star in 1917. During the First World War he volunteered to be an ambulance driver on the Italian front but was invalidly home?—having been seriously wounded while serving the infantry. In 1921 Hemingway settled in Paris, where he became part of the expatriate circle of Gertrude Stein, F.Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, and Ford Madox Ford. He was not a person who always followed the trend but a sharp observer because he believed that he was nothing if he stopped his observation.1 It was Hemingway who became not only the voice of the?“lost generation” but the preeminent writer of his time. In the 1930s, Hemingway settled in Key West, and later in Cuba, but he traveled widely to Spain, Italy, and Africa.
