The Background of English Syllabus ReformationThe English teaching in secondary schools has gotten a remarkable achievement since 1985. Firstly, English as a major subject has been popularized in middle schools. Secondly, the secondary school English syllabus revised in 1993 promoted the English teaching further. It requires that students should acquire complex language ability, in order to meet the need of students development, science and technology’s development.?In 1999 foreign language education research centre of Southwest Normal University did an investigation under the guidance and support of the Ministry of Education. Amount to 87 schools and nearly 15937 students participated in this investigation. The result indicates that the English teaching at the basic education stage has made an obvious progress compared with 1985, the average mark has increased, especially the students’ listening and speaking abilities improved greatly. 1As time goes on, science and technology is progressing; the economic integration trend is being strengthened day by day and the international competition is fiercer and fiercer. For the purpose of keeping and safeguarding the world peace, China must do more efforts to develop science and technology and strengthen the cooperation with other countries and strengthen exchange with foreign countries. So this puts a higher requirement on our education. The education at secondary school stage has its special importance. How could the education meet the social development has become a crucial problem.B. The new English SyllabusNew English syllabus was issued in 2001.
