The Importance of Listening and the Phenomenon of Students’ Poor ListeningChina has been a member of WTO which demands we Chinese improve our English. Listening, as a receptive skill, naturally precedes and serves as a basis for learning English. Teachers should be aware that it is the students’ knowledge of the phonology, semantics, and syntax acquired in listening. If your listening is very poor, you can’t say your English is good; Every English learner should begin with listening. So listening is the most important for learning a language. Certainly, we have done much for this, and we also got some achievements, but it is not enough for the 21st century students, the aim of learning is to communicate with others, but it is a difficult problem for students, because listening is the most difficult challenge for most of the students. We often hear complaints from our students that they cannot understand what the speaker says on the tape, though they seem to recognize every word he says.?“Maybe I have no talent for learning a foreign language” or?“I should build up my vocabulary and practice more” such comments are typical of what a foreign language teacher often hears when our students face learning difficulties.2. The Reasons of Poor ListeningThere are many reasons for poor listening. First, their English level is poor. Most Chinese students have low level of English, which is the most crucial factor influencing listening to be improved, it mainly includes the following:1) Bad pronunciation. They lack basic phonetic knowledge like intonation, stress, and pitch of speech sounds, etc.2) They know a small number of vocabulary and sentence patterns.??3) They’re unfamiliar with west cultural background.Second, Bad psychology, the potential difficulty of listening is the psychological obstacle.
