However, due to the strong linguistic and cultural flavor of puns, translation of pun is regarded as a difficult task by most translators. There are heated discussions over translatability and translating methods of pun. As far as pragmatics is concerned, pun is translatable; furthermore, major methods are adopted in translating on the basis of this theory. In this thesis, pragmatics is used as the guidance to analyze and improve the translation of puns. Pragmatics goes beyond the bounds of pure linguistics and pays much attention to the factors that convey meaning, culture and context. Linguistic culture includes phonology, grammar, semantics, etc. It was for a long time that a whole system of pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and figures of speech came into being in a certain language. This attaches the language its specific characteristics. Language difference often exists in such aspects as pronunciation, words and figures of speech. This inevitably leads to correspondent vacancy in translation between two languages.
