Methods: SD rats were randomized into 3 groups: model group (M group, n = 15) , valsartan group (V group, n = 15) and control group (C group, n = 10). M group and V group was treated with doxorubicin (2 mg kg-1, 1 time per week) by intraperitoneal injection. V were given valsartan (30 mg kg-1 d-1) ig .8 weeks, echocardiography, rats were observed changes in cardiac structure and function, were observed under electron microscope myocardial mitochondrial ultrastructure, determined the degree of myocardial mitochondrial swelling, membrane potential (m) and cardiac reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Results: Compared with the C, M group significantly increased cardiac chambers (P lt;0.05), cardiac function decreased significantly (P lt;0.05); V cardiac function in rats significantly improved compared with M group (P lt;0.05); with the C group, the electron microscope M group on rat heart mitochondria was swollen, cristae rupture , vacuolization, calcium-induced decline in cardiac mitochondrial swelling, membrane potential decreased significantly (P lt;0.05), ROS generation increased; V group Mitochondrial ultrastructure and swelling than the M group improved, while the membrane potential also significantly improved compared with M group (P lt;0.05), ROS generation decreased. Conclusion: Valsartan can improve doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy, cardiac structure and function, the myocardial mitochondrial structure and function may be its one of the mechanisms of myocardial protection.
