The computation of the roots of positive de?nite matrices arises in nuclear magnetic resonance, controltheory,latticequantum chromo-dynamics QCD,andseveralotherareasofapplications. TheCauchyintegraltheoremwhicharisesincomplex analysis canbeusedforcomputing f(A) ,in particular therootsofA,whereAisasquarematrix.TheCauchyintegralcanbeapproximated by usingthetrapezoidrule.Inthispaper,weaimtogiveabriefoverviewofthecomputation ofroots of positive de?nite matrices by employing integral representation. Some numerical experiments aregiventoillustratethetheoreticalresults. 1.Introduction ItiswellknownthatcontourintegralswhichformacomponentoftheCauchyintegraltheo- remhaveanimportantroleincomplexanalysis.Thetrapezoidruleispopularfortheappro- ximationofintegralsduetoitsexponentialaccuracyifparticularconditionsaresatis?ed.It hasbeenestablishedin1thatthetrapezoidrulecanbeusedtocomputecontourintegrals togiveapowerfulalgorithmforthecomputationofmatrixfunctions. Kellems1hasstudiedthecaseofcomputingamatrixsquarerootandamatrixexpo- nentialfunctionbyutilizingthetrapezoidrule.Inparticular,hefocusedonthematrixexpo- nentialeAanditsuseintheheatequation.Onlyafewtrapezoidrulepointswererequiredfor veryhighaccuracy.DaviesandHigham2haveinvestigatedthecomputationofamatr
