Catalase(EC)oxidizesethanoltoacetaldehydewithinthebrainandvariationsincatalaseactivitymayunderliesome consequencesofethanolconsumption.Thegoalsofthisstudyweretomeasurecatalaseactivityinsubcellularfractionsfromrat brainandtocomparethelevelsofthisenzymeinseveralimportantsettings.Inthe?rstseriesofstudies,levelsofcatalasewere comparedbetweenjuvenileandadultratsandbetweentheLong-Evans(LE)andSprague-Dawley(SD)strains.Levelsofcatalase appeartohaveachievedtheadultlevelbythepreadolescentperiodde?nedbypostnatalage(P,days)P25–P28,andtherewereno di?erencesbetweenstrainsatthedevelopmentalstagestested.Thus,variationincatalaseactivityisunlikelytoberesponsiblefor di?erencesinhowadolescentandadultratsrespondtoethanol.Inthesecondseriesofstudies,periadolescentandadultratswere administeredethanolchronicallythroughanethanol-containingliquiddiet.Dietconsumptionandbloodethanolconcentrations weresigni?cantlyhigherforperiadolescentrats.Catalaseactivitiesremainedunchangedfollowingethanolconsumption,withno signi?cantdi?erenceswithinorbetweenstrains.Thus,thebrainshowednoapparentadaptivechangesinlevelsofcatalase,even whenfacedwiththehighlevelsofethanolconsumptioncharacteristicofperiadolescentrats. 1.Introduction levels of acetaldehyde production could be a complicating factorinthisinterpretationif,forexample,catalasevaried asafunc
