Theethanol fermentinggenes such aspyruvate decarboxylase (pdc) andalcohol dehydrogenase II(adhII)were cloned from Zymomonasmobilisandtransformedintothreedi?erentcellulolyticbacteria,namelyEnterobactercloacaeJV,ProteusmirabilisJV andErwiniachrysanthemiandtheircellulosicethanolproductioncapabilitywasstudied.RecombinantE.cloacaeJVwasfoundto produce4.5%and3.5%(v/v)ethanol,respectively,whenCMCand4%NaOHpretreatedbagassewereusedassubstrates,whereas recombinantP.mirabilisandE.chrysanthemiwiththesamesubstratescouldonlyproduce4%,3.5%,1%,and1.5%ofethanol, respectively.TherecombinantE.cloacaestrainproducedtwofoldhigherpercentageofethanolthanthewildtype.Therecombinant E.cloacae straincouldbeimprovedfurtherbyincreasingitsethanoltolerancecapabilitythroughmediaoptimizationandalsoby combiningmultigenecellulaseexpressionforenhancingethanolproductionfromvarioustypesoflignocellulosicbiomasssothat itcanbeusedforindustriallevelethanolproduction. 1.Introduction A suitable ethanologenic and cellulose-producing bacteria could be developed by transferring genes that encode the ethanol-fermentingenzymes[6].
