Prospective cohort study of catheter- associated urinary tract infecti ons

Abstract: Objective o analyze the incidence, pathogen and risk factors of hospital acquired catheter-associated urinary tract infec-
tions. Methods During January to June in 20 06, all catheterized patients w ere reviewed by prospective cohort study in a teaching hospi-
tal. Results A total of 261 patients with hospital acquired catheter-associated urinary tract infections were identified in 485 catheterized
patients. he average morbidity was 53 . 8% and the morbidity per 1 00 0 bed-day was 26.4 . he highest infection morbidity w as in in-
tensive care unit (ICU) , followed by Department of Urology and Department of Gynecology. According to logistic regression analysis,
the risk factors of hospital acquired catheter-associated urinary infection included female gender, douching catheter w ith antimicrobial
drug, duration of catheterization, prior use of antimicrobial drug. Conclusions Incidence of hospita-l acquired urinary tract infection is
high in catheterized patients. It is imperative to make every effort to control the infection.
