Includes but is not limited to: Facility location Facility layout Quality management, and Materials requirement planning Operations Management A specialized area in management that converts or transforms resources (including human resources) into goods and services. A broader term than production management. Encompasses the production of both goods and services. Facility Location “The process of selecting a geographic location for a company’s operations.” Also known as “site selection” Key criteria are different for service versus manufacturing companies Facility Location: Service Businesses Old school (still true for many service businesses): “He with the greatest number of convenient locations wins.” New school (works for some service businesses): Fewer, but close to freeway exits Inside other businesses (co-location) Facility Location: Manufacturers Primary drivers Availability of cheap skilled labor Which is in turn affected by “quality of life” factors: weather, crime, home prices, quality of local schools, etc. (and) Cheap Land (which produce low rents) Facility Location: Manufacturers Secondary Drivers: Transportation costs Which are in turn affected by: Proximity to port and rail facilities Proximity to natural resources, and Proximity to customers Support industries Political factors Producing High Quality Goods Some conclusions U.S. manufacturers have reached in the last 30 years: Only your customer can tell you what quality looks like.
