AbstractCarbon nanotubes reinforced copper matrix (CNTs/Cu) composites with the volume fraction of 0.9% to 3.4% were fabricated by friction stir processing (FSP). Studied the microstructure and properties of the CNTs/Cu composites, analyzed the impact of different CNTs content on the microstructure and properties of the composites. On this basis, investigated the fracture mechanism, wear mechanism and strengthen mechanism of the composites.The results show that, with the volume fraction of CNTs is 0.9%, the obtained composites forming the best, and the forming of the composites tends to become worse with increasing volume fraction of CNTs, also the reunion tendency of CNTs gradually increase. By surface scanning on the center of friction stir zone of the composites can be drawn, CNTs in the composites distribution is uniform overall, but partial existence the phenomenon of segregation.The addition of CNTs have improved the hardness of the CNTs/Cu composites, and the average hardness of the composites gradually increased with increasing volume fraction of CNTs, but the hardness distribution uniformity becomes worse. Tensile strength of the CNTs/Cu composites relative to the T2 copper has improved to some extent, but elongation have a certain degree of reduction, and with the increase of CNTs volume fraction, the tensile strength and elongation of the CNTs/Cu composites trend to gradually decreased. Fracture of the composites presents the characteristics of ductile fracture, the fracture mechanism is CNTs and the copper matrix combination of interface debonding, resulting in composites play a bridging role of CNTs on the tensile fracture surface with a lot of pull out, and the reunion of the CNTs and the distribution at the grain boundaries largely affect the CNTs and the copper matrix interfacial bonding strength. The addition of CNTs in the composites can effectively improve the wear properties, and with increasing volume fraction of CNTs, the wear loss of the com
