i i Abstract The Marginalia of Life is one of the most important literary works by Qian Zhongshu, who highlights his opinions and views towards a series of important questions about life. Due to the author was in different eras and his unique language style, especially the language variation in the work, it is not an easy job for many readers to correctly understand Qian’s true meanings in his literary works. So far, some scholars have studied it from different perspectives as literature, linguistics and stylistics. However, their studies are not so satisfactory that the explanations are not forceful enough to obtain the final effect. For this special reason, this thesis tries to analyze the language variation in The Marginalia of Life from the perspective of adaptation theory, which aims to achieve a better explanation and interpretation towards this specific literary works. This thesis holds the view that language variation which deviates from the norm langue is a kind of language form, the purpose of which is to create the salient pragmatic effect, attract others’ attention and make the language depart from convention by adopting a varied approach. Jef Verschueren, a Belgium linguist, puts forth three perspectives (variability, negotiability and adaptability) in his adaptation theory, which has great guidance value on discourse analysis. Therefore, the innovative point of this thesis is to analyze the salient consciousness in the language variation by using the adaptation theory, which focuses on the contextual factors and the linguistic structure of the language variation in The Marginalia of Life, and the thesis also tries to interpret, discuss the language variation in the work from the perspective of dynamic adaptation.
