万方数据 万方数据 Variation Theory’s Application and Effects in the Chinese Versions of Sherlock Holmes for Adolescents Abstract The Translation Variation Theory was put forward by Chinese scholar Huang Zhonglian at the turn of the 21st century. Since this theory is convincing for explaining the variations in translation, investigating its application in the versions where many translation variations are adopted is expected to verify the actual acceptance of these versions. Under the theory, this paper demonstrates the translation variation methods applied in two Chinese translations of Sherlock Holmes for adolescents published respectively by Zhejiang University Press in 2010 and Hubei Fine Arts Publishing Company in 2012, and discusses the variation effects. This research aims to promote the understanding of translation variations in Chinese versions of Sherlock Holmes for adolescents, and explore the variation effects on adolescent readers. The hypothesis of this thesis is that translation variations exist in both Chinese versions of Sherlock Holmes for adolescents. Based on the hypothesis, two questions are to be answered. The first question is what translation variation methods are adopted if translation variations exist in both versions. As translators’ purpose of using translation variations is to meet the specific needs of adolescent readers, the second question to be answered is whether the translation works have achieved the expected effects on adolescents. The thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter One is a brief introduction of the background, purpose, significance and questions of the research. Chapter Two is the literature review in which studies on adult and adolescent versions of Sherlock Holmes are summarized. Chapter Three deals with the Translation Variation Theory focusing on its variation devices, translation variation methods and variation effects.
