Study on the Responses of Ship Fenders under Impact Load
ABSTRACT
Engineering ships often berth against each other during work. Fender structures, as a medium in between, play a vital role in cushioning dynamic load. Sometimes, these structures undergo large deformations to protect ship hull. Thus, it can be found that fender structures are closely correlated with ship safety. However, due to lack of multiple resources such as equipment and funding, there have been few experiments on fenders’ responses under low velocity impact. With the development of finite element simulation in the past two decades, we can numerically simulate the dynamic behavior of fenders on computer.
Although the safe berthing velocity for ships with various tonnage is documented in “Rules for Load in Harbor Engineering” and “Code of Practice for Design of Fender and Mooring System”. It is so far unclear the requirement for ship fenders under dynamic load. Hence, it is meaningful to explore the crashworthiness of various types of fenders as well as ship structural safety. It is, too, of great value to seek for the optimal fender structure. This work includes:
Simplify of the berthing model
A series of simplifying assumptions are proposed: the side structure of the dredger is assumed to be a linear spring with large rigidity; the rubber
fender to be a nonlinear spring and the berthing ship to be a rigid mass. Based on principle of energy balance, the maximum berthing force is obtained.
Carry out finite element analysis of berthing scenario
The finite element model of the dredger’s side structure, the fender structure and the berthing mass is established. The reflection force and energy absorption of three types of rubber fenders are compared and the limit safe berthing velocity is obtained. The finite element results coincide well with the theoretical maximum berthing force. Furthermore, the dynamic response of the side structure is analyzed.
