The Numerical Simulation of Spray and Combustion of Methanol-diesel Blends Engine
ABSTRACT
Our country is faced with the huge energy crisis, the shortage of petroleum and environmental pollution in particular. Methanol is an environmentally friendly, renewable biomass fuel. It can be refined from coal, wood, natural gas, oil and straw and even synthesized with city combustible garbage. The coalfield scatters all over our country and forest is quite broad in north and south China. It is feasible to refine methanol from coal or wood. If methanol can be partly used in engine, it will make great social and economic benefits.
In this paper, the three-dimensional CFD computing model has been established and the simulation of spray and combustion process of diesel engine and methanol-diesel engine has been carried out. First, in order to verify the availability of the model, the calculation of the selected model is validated. And then the spray and combustion process of diesel engine and methanol-diesel engine are simulated. The sauter mean diameter, penetration length, temperature field, velocity field and concentration field of the two kinds of fuel are shown in detail. In addition, another thing is done that how the three parameters, such as the injection advance angle, the proportion of methanol in the blend fuel and swirl ratio effect on the process of spray and combustion.
The in-cylinder pressure from simulation agrees well with the experimental data which proves that the selected model is reasonable. If 15% methanol is used in diesel engine without any variation, the ignition delay period becomes longer and it has a better mixing with air; concentration field is more uniform, which helps to reduce soot emissions. In addition, the high latent heat of vaporization of methanol reduces the cylinder temperature, which inhibits the formation of NO.
