Communication can bring people together, but culture keeps them apart. So this thesis aims at leading people to a deeper understanding of one aspect of the complexity of intercultural communication and providing them with a cultural perspective in dealing with the common problems in intercultural communicat ion. Through the study of 1inguistic taboos in Chinese and English, this thesis is intended to enable people to know what is taboo and their similarities as well as differences between the two languages? There are five chapters in this thesis. In the first chapter, it has a general description of study. In the second chapter, literature review will be mentioned. Def ini ti on o f tabooisi ntroduced. After tha t, characteristics as well as derivation are mentioned? Then, the major studies on taboos in China and English are introduced? In the third chapter, five comparisons of taboos are mentioned. In the fourth chap ter, suggestions are provided which in eludes the appropriate attitudes and some useful strategies. The last chapter draws the conclusion of this thesis. TT Literature Review Definition of Taboo Taboo was borrowed from Tonga, an island group in Polynesia, and its first recorded use in English was used by Captain James Cook(1729-1779), an English navigator. He came to the arch i pel ago of Tonga during his explorations in the sout her n part of the Pacific Ocean. There he heard the word from local people, which originally referred to persons, activities (including speech), or things under prohibition because they were considered, on the one hand, ascared and considered , and on the other hand, he introduced it into English in his description as udangerousv and unclean in his third voyage around the world in 1777.1 In China, at least as early as in the Han D
