Abstract： Metaphor is not only the stylistic characteristics of the language, but also thecognitive features of language. Metaphor occupies a pivotal position in cognitive linguistics. Thestudy is mainly based on the famous cognitive metaphor theory proposed by Gorge Lakoff andMark Johnson in Metaphors We Live By. This thesis selects humorous lines from popularAmerican sitcom How I Met Your Mother as text data and from three aspects——structuralmetaphor, ontological metaphor and orientational metaphor to tentatively analyze the underlyingmechanism of verbal humor generation. The author tried to testify the explanatory power of thistheory in explanation of verbal humor. By means of analysis, this thesis can prove that applycognitive metaphor theory to understand verbal humor is feasible and the metaphor is one ofmechanism of verbal humor. The author would like to help readers to better understand abstractcognitive conceptual. Meanwhile, it is hopefully that this study could help ESL learners enjoythe fascination of English verbal humor from different angles.
