Unit One (Book 1) Section A A Language Teacher’s Personal Opinion Section B Learning to Read Teaching Objectives: In this unit, we intend to help the students to know: -----the effective ways to learn English in Section A; -----how to love books and feel more confident about their reading activities in Section B. And the students should grasp: -----Reading skill: Finding out word meanings; -----Writing skill: A paragraph of cause and effect; -----Structure: (1) The usage of subjunctive mood. (2) The usage of inverted order; -----Collocation: “worth”. When we use this expression we should always use the V-ing form after the word “worth”, never an infinitive. -----New Words: claim; fluently; reference; efficiently; individual; personality; character; equivalent; communication; communicate; furthermore; intelligent; confusion; adventure. -----Phrases: be worth sth./ doing sth., according to; It/There is no use doing sth.; to an/some/a certain extent; have an advantage over; go to extremes; provide…with/for; in one’s opinion. -----Differentiation: personality---character---nature---temper base---basis---foundation claim---state efficient---effective Possible Difficulties: -----L8: If it were as easy to learn English as they say, I would have to look for another job, because very few qualified teachers would be needed. -----L16: …, and it is no use pretending that anyone has discovered a perfect way of teaching English in every possible situation. -----L28: Some students go to the opposite extreme and think they can teach themselves at home with dictionaries. -----L30: But it is wrong to assume that each word in English has a precise equivalent in another language and vice versa.
