By analyzing the Chinese and English version of folk tales of the West Lake, the author focuses on the strategies of the translation of Chinese culture-loaded words, especially addressing the issue of culture equivalence and realizing the purpose of translating and spreading the tourist culture. Key words: Chinese culture-loaded words; folk tales of the West Lake; functional equivalence theory; skopos theory Chapter 1 Introduction 1．1 Background of the Research Since China’s implementation of the reform and its opening policy in 1978,?its tourism industry has seen a rapid development,which takes a positive effect on the economy in China.Some experts expect that China will have the world’s largest international tourists by 2020. Upon this trend, tourism materials have become increasingly important. Since English has become the worlds common language, Chinese-English (hereafter referred to as C-E) translation of tourism materials has become a major medium for the outside world to know Chinas tourist resources, and more importantly, its culture. Translation of tourism materials is not only an activity of converting one language into another but an intercultural communicative activity of great significance.Tourism is closely related to culture. Chinas five thousand years history increases the difficulty of the translation of tourism materials, especially dealing with the culture-loaded words and expressions. However, the?current situation o
