Introduction?Thomas Hardy?(1840-1928), one of the greatest Victorian novelists, was one of the representatives of English critical realism at the turn of the 19th century. His father was a stonemason and builder, his mother passed on her love of reading and books to him. Thomas Hardy derived a love of music from his father and devotion to literature from his mother. He grew up living and examining rural life, which figures prominently in many of his novels. By 1862, when he was 22, Hardy left for London to work as a draftsman, and started to write poems, which idealized the rural life. Poor health forced Hardy to return to his native region in 1867. During this period of his life, Hardy was writing continually. His early novels such as Desperate Remedies?(1871) and A Pair of Blue Eyes?(1873) met with small success and may be considered formative works. His success made marriage feasible, and in 1874 he married Emma Lavinia Gifford. The next two novels, The Return of the Native?(1878) and The Mayor of Casterbridge?(1886), established Hardy as a formidable writer. Tess of the D’Urbervilles?(1891) and Jude the Obscure?(1895), which were his last long fiction works. In 1912, Hardy’s wife, Emma, died, ending 20 years of domestic estrangement. In 1914, Hardy married Florence Emily Dugdale, with whom he lived until his death on January 11, 1928.Hardy lived in a changing and turbulent time. Seeing the capitalism give the working people, especially farmers, adversity and disaster, he felt sympathetic to them. After the 1970s, when the invasion of capitalism destroyed the entire country, and the rural infrastructure of the patriarchal society completely shattered, he explained the reasons for social change with idealism.
