Sizereductionisthe?rststepformanufacturingbiofuelsfromwoodybiomass.Itisusuallyperformedusingmillingmachinesand theparticlesizeiscontrolledbythesizeofthesieveinstalledonamillingmachine.Therearereportedstudiesaboutthee?ectsof sievesizeonenergyconsumptioninmillingofwoodybiomass.Thesestudiesshowthatenergyconsumptionincreaseddramatically assievesizebecamesmaller.However,inthesestudies,thesugaryield(proportionaltobiofuelyield)inhydrolysisofthemilled woodybiomasswasnotmeasured.Thelackofcomprehensivestudiesaboutthee?ectsofsievesizeonenergyconsumptionin biomassmillingandsugaryieldinhydrolysisprocessmakesitdi?culttodecidewhichsievesizeshouldbeselectedinorderto minimizetheenergyconsumptioninsizereductionandmaximizethesugaryieldinhydrolysis.Thepurposeofthispaperisto?ll thisgapintheliterature.Inthispaper,knifemillingofpoplarwoodwasconductedusingsievesofthreesizes(1,2,and4mm).
