Objective.Depressionhasbeenfoundtobeanindependentriskfactorwithcardiovasculardiseases(CVDs)andalsoassociated withincreasedmortalityamongthesepatients.Method.Weusedacomprehensivedatabaseofallsuicides(n=2,283)committed inNorthernFinlandwithinformationonallhospital-treatedcardiovasculardiseasesandpsychiatricdisorders.Results .Coronary arterydisease(CAD)hadbeenpresentin7.7%andothercardiovasculardiseases(CVDs)in11.6%ofthesuiciders.Thelikelihood ofsuicideforpatientswithhospital-treatedCADwasestimatedtobetwo-foldcomparedtothegeneralpopulationwhilelikelihood for suicide was not elevated among those with other CVDs. Males with CAD and females with CAD or any CVD had been hospitalizedsigni?cantlymoreoftenwithdepressioncomparedtoreferencegroup.Conclusions.Suicidalityamongpatientswith cardiovasculardiseaseshasbeensuggestedtoassociatewithdepression.Psychiatricconsultationishighlyrecommendedinclinical practiceforcardiacpatientswithdepressionoralcohol-relateddisorders. 1.Introduction inthecommunity,diagnosingdepressioninhospitalsettings maybeamajorfactorinsuicideprevention[11].
