Weused Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)combined with?ow cytometry tostudy theapoptosis and necrosis processes in Jurkat, a lymphocyte cell line. The apoptosis was induced in the cells by a chemical agent, the actinomycin D, whilethenecrosis wasinduced lowering thepH value to4.2. Theapoptotic events wereanalysed by?ow cytometry(usingannexinVandpropidiumiodide)andcontemporarymonitoredbyFTIRspectroscopyatdifferenttimesafter thetreatment.Thiscomparisonallowedusto?ndintheIRspectrum,between3000cm?1and2800cm?1,a“markerband” of theapoptosis corresponding to theexposure of phosphatidylserine on the outer lea?et of themembrane.
