Since these processes are often being studied separately, the functional organizationofexecutivecontrolprocesseswithintheIFCremainsunclear. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:WeconductedanfMRIstudytoexaminetheactivitiesofthesubdivisionsofIFCduring the presentation of a task cue (rule retrieval) and during the performance of a stop-signal task (requiring response generationandinhibition)incomparisontoanot-stoptask(requiringresponsegenerationbutnotinhibition).Weutilizeda mixedevent-relatedandblockdesigntoseparatebrainactivityincorrespondencetotransientcontrolprocessesfromrule- relatedandsustainedcontrolprocesses.WefounddifferentiationincontrolprocesseswithintheIFC.Ourfindingsreveal thatthebilateralventral-posteriorIFC/anteriorinsulaaremoreactiveonbothsuccessfulandunsuccessfulstoptrialsrelative tonot-stoptrials,suggestingtheirpotentialroleintheearlystageofstoppingsuchastriggeringthestopprocess.Direct countermandingseemstobeoutsideoftheIFC.Incontrast,thedorsal-posteriorIFC/inferiorfrontaljunction(IFJ)showed transientactivityincorrespondencetotheinfrequentpresentationofthestopsignalinbothtasksandtheleftanteriorIFC showeddifferentialactivityinresponsetothetaskcues.TheIFCsubdivisionsalsoexhibitedsimilarbutdistinctpatternsof functionalconnectivityduringresponsecontrol. Conclusions/Significance:OurfindingssuggestthatexecutivecontrolprocessesaredistributedacrosstheIFCandthatthe differen
