1. Analysis of the teaching contents:
This is the first teaching period of this unit. The central part of this period is the reading passage with the name of Journey down the mekong showing the students travel journal.
Warming up gives two questions for the students to discuss, aiming at preparing the students for both the content and the grammar of the unit. Prreading provides some questions and a picture to help the students focus on the topic of the reading passage and lead the students to think about some
things of great rivers, such as things about how to make use of them in peoplersquo;s daily life, choose which one to follow the route, list the countries that the Mekong River flows through.
Reading gives the students the background about the bike trip, especially the planning that went into it. It also introduces to the students the four young people who made the trip: Wang Kun, the writer of the journal
and his sister, Wang Wei, and their cousins Dao Wei and Yu Hang. This section also introduces to the students many of the geographical terms they will use
throughout the SB and WB parts: source, valley, glacier, waterfall, rapids, meander, delta.
Comprehending consists of five written or oral practice for the students to do so as to help them to get a better understanding of the text, that is to say, to help the teacher to check how much the students have understood the text.
2. Teaching aims:
(1) To know the meaning of the following new words and phrases appearing in this passage: journal, transport,prefer, disadvantage, fare, flow, ever since, persuade,cycle, graduate, finally, schedule, fond, be fond of,shortcoming, stubborn, organize, care about, determine,determined, change onersquo;s mind, journey, altitude, make up onersquo;s mind, give in, valley, pace, bend, attitude.
