Chapter One INTRODUCTION1.1 Background of the StudyTranslation researches have experienced three stages, that is, language, linguistics, and culture. In the 1970’s, scholars began to attach importance to cultural elements in translation researches. After the cultural turn in translation researches, some western scholars have studied translation problems from the perspectives of culture, history, society, etc. Since then, they have researched translation beyond language and focused on the relationship between language and culture. For translation is considered as an intercultural communication, how to translate under multi-cultural background, especially how to do with the cultural elements in translation or simply how to make a “good” translation becomes a hot issue. One of the most important questions a translator needs to consider first is “what and how one ought to translate”. Since translation is a communication based on interpersonal relation and a cooperative activity that takes place under a larger social and political background between different nations and cultures, it needs to be evaluated ethically. Therefore, translation cannot escape from the ethical issues that arise in other walks of life. What’s more, with the acceleration of globalization, translation plays an important role in social and cultural communication. Thus, ethics turns to be a principle and guidance in coordinating diverse relations involved in translation, eliminating conflicts and misunderstanding, facilitating multi-cultural communication and so on. Under this circumstance, some scholars came up with a new translation term—translation ethics, and it becomes a hot issue in modern translation researches.Purpose of the StudyThe English version of Fortress Besieged has attracted many scholars’ attentionever since its publication in 1970s.
