ABSTRACT ABSTRACT II II ABSTRACT The innovation country is currently being developed and the CAS-piloted project of KIP (Knowledge Innovation Program) is fully being carried into execution. Therefore，it is very important to improve the innovation capacity of the institute for science and technology. S institute belongs to Chinese Academy of Sciences，and is one of the national science and technology teams. It has mainly been devoted to application research of the large instruments and equipment. The complex procedures of developing instrumentations include scheme reviews，design， manufacturing，assembly，prototype，finalizing the design and delivery to the user. Thus, the S institute is a typical application engineering institute. An in-depth comparison and analysis has given to the positioning and developing target，manufacturing process，research teams，ST funding，equipment and basic facilities，product development，ST management system，talent inspirit， innovative cultural environment，marketing，ST information，technical papers and dissertations，patents and achievements, etc. For the application engineering institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences their main tasks are experimental and developing study, while they are characteristic of application research. They are engaged in developing the large engineering equipment including multi-phases, complex processes and high-level technology innovation during the development. Based on the characteristics of application engineering institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences and status on technology innovation of S institute，the process roadmap of technology innovation is proposed, building a theoretical evaluation model on the technology innovation capability for application engineering institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
