The Preface includes the explanation of the subject’ s selection and its significance, a summary of previous studies on this subject, and a brief introduction of the outline, the theme and the ideological significance of the novel. Chapter One discusses Li Luyuan’ s views on literature, the causation of Li’ s views on literature, “Zai Dao” and “realistic writing”, through research into Li’ s family background, his career and thoughts. The contradictions between his literature views and his practical production are revealed, and the causes of the contradictions are analyzed. Chapter Two analyzes the narrative structure of Qi Lu Deng, points out the novel’ s featherlike structure, and discusses this structure’ s originality and artistic value. Then the author expounds Qi Lu Deng’ s completeness and fineness in narration in four aspects: three main paragraphs, happy ending, foreshadowing and echo, the plot’ s insertion and transition.
